Yo, simio Yo simio (I, Ape)
The main character of this novel is an ape who relates his early years in a zoo, his escape and his subsequent attempts at adapting to the world of human beings. These human beings for their part do not know what to make of him, they shun him as different, all the while not realizing that he is an ape.
Ape lives among vagabonds, the only people who regard him as an equal. Ape is quiet and innocent and only wants to learn. Gradually he comes to grasp the humans’ strange customs. And he finally finds a job as a gardener in a great mansion where he works as a silent, efficient employee.
At the end of his existence, Ape realizes that all his efforts have been in vain, that he will never be like humans. But when he fulfills his greatest ambition, learning to read, he also learns something fundamental: he recognizes himself as a free ape, leading a simple, uncomplicated life, incapable of looking down on others on account of appearances.
